Oxidative Stress Test-FORT
“Oxidative stress” is the general phenomenon of oxidant exposure and antioxidant depletion, or oxidant-antioxidant balance. Although Reactive Oxygen/Nitrogen Species (ROS/RNS) play an important role in immunemediated defence against invading microorganisms and serve as cell-signalling molecules, at high concentrations, ROS/RNS are capable of damaging host tissues, i.e., they can modify or damage DNA, lipids, and proteins.
Over the past four decades, a substantial body of data has accumulated to support the direct or indirect association between free radicals and various human diseases. Given the number of patients world-wide suffering from these disorders, and the association with free radicals, screening of oxidative stress (OS) and consequently lifestyle and dietary changes are fundamental for a preventive approach. The role of OS in ageing, neurodegenerative, vascular and other diseases is more and more widely accepted.
